Red Ribbon Week Teaches South Whittier Students the Power of Smart, Safe Choices

Throughout the week, campuses came alive with dress-up days that gave students a fun, visible way to show their commitment to healthy living. The themed days brought classmates together and sparked conversations about why making positive choices matters, on campus and beyond.
The highlight of the week was a series of assemblies led by the CHP. A CHP sergeant spoke to students about the importance of saying no to drugs and how substance use can stand in the way of the goals they hope to reach in life. Whether a student dreams of becoming an athlete, a doctor, an artist, or an engineer, the sergeant emphasized that drugs can derail those dreams.
To make the message hit home, the officers offered a memorable demonstration. A teacher volunteered to shoot a basketball, first under normal conditions and then while wearing special goggles designed to mimic the distorted vision and impaired judgment of someone under the influence. Students watched as shots that came easily moments earlier suddenly greatly missed the mark.
The activity gave students a clear, visual understanding of how drastically perception can be altered by drugs and alcohol. If a simple basketball shot becomes difficult, students could see how much more dangerous it would be to make decisions behind the wheel or in other high-stakes situations.
After the demonstration, the officers shared a message of care and encouragement. They reminded students how important and loved they are, and that every decision they make affects not only themselves but also the people around them, including their families, friends, and loved ones. The message helped students see that a single choice can create ripples far beyond their own lives.
The CHP wrapped up each assembly with an exciting motorcycle demonstration. Afterward, students had the chance to meet the officers and take photos with them. These friendly interactions helped build trust and showed students that law enforcement officers are approachable members of their community who care about their safety and success.
Thank you to the California Highway Patrol for their partnership and for taking the time to connect with students! Through events like these, the district continues to nurture students who are not only academically successful but also equipped to make smart, safe choices.
